Our Why
In 2023, my sister underwent what was expected to be a routine procedure in Houston to remove a pituitary tumor. She should have gone home after one night in the hospital. Instead, she stayed for several days because of severe migraines, nausea, and weakness.
When she was finally discharged, she still didn't feel completely well. A few hours after getting home, her pain became severe. Her husband and my mom sat with her, unsure what was normal recovery and what was something more serious. Was this expected after surgery? Should they wait it out? Should they go back to the hospital?
No one knew.
After several painful and uncertain hours, she developed a fever and returned to the emergency room. She was diagnosed with meningitis related to a complication from the procedure and required readmission for IV antibiotics, pain control, and further treatment.
Later, she told us the hardest part wasn't only the pain — it was the uncertainty. She wished someone had checked in. Someone who could help her understand whether what she was experiencing was expected, whether she should seek help, and whether she was okay.
That experience stayed with us.
Bolden was built for those moments after discharge — when patients and families are home, vulnerable, and often left wondering what to do next.
